Barnes & Noble, the world's largest bookseller, announced the launch of its 2009 Summer Reading program with the bestselling series "Percy Jackson & The Olympians." In the series, culminating with the final book The Last Olympian, author Rick Riordan takes young readers on the adventures of Percy Jackson, a young half-god, half-human son of the gods of Olympus. The world of Greek myths comes alive to children as Percy Jackson and his demigod friends fight mythological monsters and the forces of the titan lord Kronos. This summer, Rick Riordan is helping Barnes & Noble lead a literary adventure, taking reading out of the classroom while giving students the chance to earn a free book.

Rick Riordan will be making Barnes & Noble in-store appearances on May 20, in San Antonio, Texas; June 19, in Mesa, Arizona and Saturday, August 29, in Brentwood, Tennessee. He will also participate in a Summer Reading blog at Barnes & Noble.com, where various authors will post about summer reading memories and children’s literacy. More information, including interactive activities for children and a video interview with Rick Riordan, is available at www.bn.com/summerreading.

"A former middle school teacher, Rick Riordan is the perfect partner to help Barnes & Noble foster a love of reading in students this summer," said Jaime Carey, chief merchandising officer for Barnes & Noble, Inc. "The Barnes & Noble Summer Reading Program is a fantastic way to encourage kids to read during the summer," says Rick Riordan. "Summer is a critical time to instill a love of books and create lifelong readers."

Barnes & Noble community relations managers will be distributing activity kits in-stores, at their local schools and at many public libraries. Teachers, parents and children can download the materials for free at www.bn.com/summerreading.

In addition to earning a free book by reading, children who participate in the Summer Reading program are eligible to win a free, signed copy of The Last Olympian. Riordan will sign hundreds of copies so that each store across the country has one book to give away.

May 26 2009 - PR Tips on Working With the Media

For many people, the thought of approaching a journalist or TV or radio producer is a scary proposition: they worry about what they should or shouldn't say, how friendly they should be and a myriad of other things. On Tuesday, May 26 at 8 pm Eastern/5 pm Pacific, public relations expert Lisa Elia will host a free teleseminar in which she will interview media insiders who will explain how they would like to be approached, tips for pitching the media properly and how to shine on camera. Elia will also share PR tips people can use to secure publicity, and she will introduce her upcoming "Secrets of PR Success" program.

In her more than 20 years helping small businesses and entrepreneurs launch and expand their businesses, Elia has found that teaching clients how to deal with the media and training them for interviews is extremely helpful and empowering to her clients. In preparing clients for interviews she has booked for them on "The Oprah Winfrey Show," CNN, E! Entertainment Television, Time Magazine, Redbook and hundreds of other media outlets, Elia sought a simple way to remind clients to be at their best in any public relations situation.

"I created the CLEAR acronym to give people an easy way to remember how to communicate most effectively and positively. 'CLEAR' stands for 'Communicate with Love, Enthusiasm, Appreciation and Respect,'" says Elia.

Elia provides these interview preparation tips:

"Other things people can do to prepare themselves before making a call or doing an interview are:

-- Rehearse: Even if you're a great speaker and you know your topic inside and out, media interviews are different than business presentations and interviews. You must be very succinct and you rarely have time to give illustrative examples like you could in business settings.

-- Breathe: Breathe in for five counts; hold for five counts; breathe out for five counts. Do this a few times to release tension in your body and your diaphragm. Your voice will sound stronger and less shaky after doing this.

-- Change your mental state: If you've been busily rushing through your day or driving to an interview, take a moment to center yourself and focus on the message you're about to share.

-- Keep your facts on hand: Be sure you've done your homework and that you have your key message points, facts and figures you'll need on paper so you can look at them quickly before the interview."

Elia recently created http://www.clearpublicist.com/ to provide small businesses and entrepreneurs with do-it-yourself PR information in the form of free PR reports and a free weekly ezine that's filled with PR tips and information. She is introducing Secrets of PR Success, an in-depth, 16-week teleseminar series for entrepreneurs, small businesses or anyone who wants to learn to use public relations strategies for branding, publicity and financial growth. This course begins June 3. The deadline for registration is May 29.

Poe's Body Exhumed From Baltimore Cemetery And Returned To Philadelphia In Brat Productions' Haunted Poe

During this the 200th anniversary year of Edgar Allan Poe's birth, Brat Productions will unearth the images, characters and scenes from works by the master of the macabre for the world premiere of Haunted Poe, a theatrical production uniting literature, history and theater with the haunted attraction genre.

A 10,000 square foot warehouse will be transformed into an eerie maze of chambers into which audiences will be guided through short vignettes designed to surprise and shock in unexpected ways. "In each room, around every corner, another scare awaits," said Producing Artistic Director Michael Alltop.

The 11 featured tales include "The Tell-tale Heart," "The Raven," "The Black Cat," "The Masque of the Red Death," "The Cask of Amontillado," and "The Pit and the Pendulum," written by Poe in Philadelphia, between 1838-1844.

Haunted Poe will run October 1 – November 1, 2009 at 38 Jackson Street in Philadelphia. Timed tickets, ranging from $10 - $25, will be available at www.hauntedpoe.com beginning July 6. [A full performance schedule and ticket details follow in the fact sheet below.] The performance dates will coincide with the Third International Edgar Allan Poe Conference: The Bicentennial, scheduled for October 8-10 at the Hyatt Regency at Penn's Landing in Philadelphia.

Haunted Poe begins with the premise that the author's remains have been exhumed from Westminster Cemetery in Baltimore and brought to Philadelphia for the anniversary of his death (October 7, 1849). With Poe's return to the place of some of his greatest literary achievements, he is brought back to life to guide us through his imagination.

Alltop, who conceived the work, went on to say, "Audiences will witness a plot being hatched by a madman; see a corpse take on life as shrieks erupt from under shaking floorboards; peek through holes in the wall to spy on unspeakable crimes; navigate their way through tunnels lined with skeletons; and look in vain for an escape as the walls of a room close in on them."

A team of talented Philadelphia artists has been assembled for Haunted Poe: award-winning director/actor/playwright Madi Distefano, founder of Brat Productions in 1996, shapes this theatrical amusement; playwright Bruce Walsh adapts his keen sense of writing for alternative venues for the script; Brad Helm, former designer and technical director for Eastern State Penitentiary's Terror Behind the Walls, oversees production elements, including sound, video, lighting, costumes, special effects, masks, puppets, blood and gore; and "Philly Poe Guy" Edward Pettit provides literary and historical context.

Haunted Poe is a theatrical project that differs from other haunted attractions. There will be no roaring chainsaws or pulsing lights, no reliance on sonic blasts or hydraulic monsters. Although modern technology will be used in the production, the costumes, props and scenic elements will be period-correct, with chills derived from the psychological thrills that are the hallmark of Poe's work. His catalog of terror – phobias, insanity, nightmares, haunted houses, torture, premature burial, murder, dismemberment, ghosts and the undead – will be ever-present.

Brat Production's Haunted Poe has been funded by The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage through the Philadelphia Theatre Initiative with additional support from the Marketing Innovation Program.

June 3 2009 - Free Internet Marketing Workshop for Artists and Artisans

As more and more artists develop websites to introduce their work to a world-wide online community the question often turns to, what is the best way to make this online community more aware of my website?s existence, and what other online methods should I employ to make my work more visible?

As part of an ongoing effort to assist artists and communities with answering these questions, Darrell Bulmer and Kerstin Gilg of the Maine Arts Commission will present a 2-hour workshop that demonstrates and simplifies online marketing for artists.

Using various Maine artists as examples, this presentation will show attendees how they can employ similar methods to further their internet marketing efforts. Some of the topics included during this workshop will be the use of social networking sites, the development and usage of email lists, websites, blogs and online cooperatives. There will also be clear examples of the usage of free online resources from companies such as Google as well as an introduction to the emerging use of online sites such as eBay and YouTube.

Darrell and Kerstin will go beyond simply introducing these online elements by demonstrating their usage; they will walk attendees through some online procedures that reflect the most common questions and concerns from previous workshops. The discussion will retain a focus of finding which online marketing services are most beneficial for individuals and how continuous tracking can guide the success of future efforts.

Artists and artisans are encouraged to bring their questions to this workshop as time will be provided to answer as many as possible throughout the evening.

This workshop is free to attend; those requiring more information or wishing to register should call 1-800-442-2092 (Wendy Rose at Women, Work, and Community) or email Wendy at wkrose@maine.edu. The workshop is co-sponsored by Women, Work, and Community and the Kennebec Valley Art Association.

May 15 2009 - Visiting Writer Series Brings Scottish-born Novelist to OSU

Scottish-born novelist Margot Livesey will visit the Oregon State University campus on Friday, May 15,. to read from her most recent work, the award-winning novel "The House on Fortune Street."

A question-and-answer session and a book-signing will follow the reading, which begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Valley Library's first floor rotunda. The event is free and open to the public.

Livesey was raised in a boys' school in the Scottish Highlands where her father taught and her mother was the school nurse. After getting her bachelor's degree at the University of York, Livesey worked in shops and restaurants while honing her craft as a fiction writer. Her efforts began to pay off in 1986, with the publication of her short story collection, "Learning by Heart," published by Penguin/Canada.

Since the mid-1980s, she has published six novels, each of which has received consistent raves from critics both here and abroad. Los Angeles Times critic Richard Eder, in writing about "The House on Fortune Street," described Livesey as "a shrewd diagnostician of Western mini-maladies…acutely observant; her psychological algebra is admirable and sometimes astonishing." Leah Greenblatt of Entertainment Weekly called her writing "melodic, intimate, and perfectly calibrated."

Livesey's novels and stories revolve around trust and intimacy in human relationships, uncovering in understated prose shocking truths about parents and children, friends and lovers. Her earlier novels include "Eva Moves the Furniture," a tribute to her own mother's upbringing in Scotland, and "Homework," in which a young woman is at the mercy of a small child's dark domestic plot.

She has taught writing in a number of prestigious programs in the United States, including the Iowa Writers Workshop and the Warren Wilson Program for Writers. She is a distinguished visiting writer at both Emerson College and Bowdoin College. Among her awards are fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and National Endowment for the Arts.

"The House on Fortune Street," published in 2008, won the 2009 L.L. Winship/Pen New England Award for Fiction.

Livesey's visit to Corvallis is the final event in this year's OSU Visiting Writers Series, and is supported by the Valley Library, the Office of the Provost, and the OSU Department of English.

May 12 2009 - PR Tips From Public Relations Expert Lisa Elia

With thousands of new businesses being launched daily and existing business owners trying to remain competitive, understanding the proper use of publicity and public relations is more important than ever. On May 12 at 9 pm Eastern/6 pm Pacific, public relations expert Lisa Elia will host a free teleseminar in which she will provide tips people can use immediately to gain publicity and she will introduce her upcoming 16-week teleseminar, "Secrets of PR Success."

"Publicity is crucial to the success of most businesses, and it can really help a small business grow quickly. However, there's much more to public relations than just publicity," says Lisa Elia, owner and president of the Los Angeles-based PR firm Lisa Elia Public Relations. "Most people don't understand that public relations refers to how you relate to all of your publics: publicity is a part of this, but it's not all there is to PR."

Elia, who has helped hundreds of entrepreneurs and small businesses launch and grow their businesses in her more than 20 years in the PR industry, recommends that you gain clarity on your mission, your purpose for doing PR and your brand before you promote yourself or your business. She says:

"Ask yourself these questions:

-- Why do I do what I do?
-- Why does the world need to know about it?
-- How will my message be best received -- with humor, sensitivity,
directness?
-- What is the image I want to project?
-- How can I convey this through my brand -- choice of colors, taglines,
company culture, etc.?"

In working with each client, Elia begins with the foundation of developing a clear picture of the mission, purpose for PR, brand and image. She states that this is what has enabled her to secure placements for her clients with national media, including "The Oprah Winfrey Show," CNN, E! Entertainment Television, Los Angeles Times, New York Times, Time, In Style, and hundreds of other outlets.

Elia recently formed www.clearpublicist.com to provide free downloadable PR information and tools and to provide programs to educate entrepreneurs who want to learn to handle their own PR or to maximize the effectiveness of their PR efforts.

May 27 2009 - Conference on Future and Sustainability of Journalism

Two universities are bringing together journalists, researchers, scholars, entrepreneurs, technologists, regulators and the public in Washington, D.C., on May 27 for a "critical convening" on the future and sustainability of journalism and America's newspapers. Topics to be covered include privacy, advertising, personalization and subscription networks for web news and services.

The conference, "From Gatekeeper to Information Valet: Workplans for Sustaining Journalism," is set for Wednesday, May 27, from 10am to 4pm at the downtown Washington, D.C., campus of The George Washington University. It will include findings from a new national survey tracking consumer attitudes toward privacy, commissioned by the Reynolds Institute at the Missouri School of Journalism, the principal organizer of the event.

"The news about the news is jarring," said Bill Densmore, a fellow at the Donald W. Reynolds Journalism Institute (RJI). "It includes hearings on Capitol Hill, new ideas about charging for content, services that profoundly affect user privacy, huge business losses among icons of American journalism and thousands of layoffs."

Divided into fast-paced briefing and participatory work and news sessions, the conference will be staged in state-of-the-art Jack Morton Auditorium at GWU. All-day registration of $55 includes lunch and refreshments.

Participants will exchange the latest news and ideas about tools, systems and services likely to sustain the values, principles and purposes of independent journalism. Participants will organize briefings on key initiatives and technologies, stage a round of afternoon breakout sessions and then wrap up by considering what's been learned and what next steps are required. In addition, RJI will describe the planned formation of the Journalism Trust Innovation Engine (JTIA) -- a place, and ideas, around which journalism's supporters can stand up, partner, experiment, leave the gates behind, and begin sharing in a new information commons.

Other event details planned include a strategic overview of news-industry opportunities and challenges and discussion of the Information Valet Project, another Reynolds Institute project.

After lunch, Dr. Lee Wilkins, professor, Missouri School of Journalism, will discuss findings from a new national survey of public attitudes toward the sharing of private information via the web. Then Missouri graduate student Emily Sussman will document and discuss a 14-year history of efforts to "monetize" news and other web content. Other briefings will be provided by Charles Lewis, founder of the Center for Public Integrity, one of the earliest non-profit watchdog journalism organizations, and Prof. James Hamilton, of Duke University, an expert on the financing of news.

The event is public, but attendance is limited. For required online registration, go to http://www.journalismtrust.org. The George Washington University Inn is providing a special lodging rate for attendees.
