June 1 2010 - Prolific Writing Seminar Gets Writers Unstuck, Forever

For every person who says they’d like to write a book someday, there are two or three who have embarked on a pet writing project – or something they should complete for work – that remains unfinished. Sometimes the project has been on hold for an embarrassingly long time, like years. For those who still nourish hope of completing their writing project, an upcoming writing seminar shows the way. Taught via four teleseminar conference calls in June, it teaches how to pick up an unfinished manuscript again or begin one that hasn’t been started and bring it painlessly to completion (www.yudkin.com/complete.htm ).

"This writing workshop focuses on techniques of writing that enable anyone to toss away excuses and get a lot of writing done in a short amount of time," says author and creativity expert Marcia Yudkin, who has published 11 books, thousands of articles and close to a dozen multimedia courses. "If you learn to harness your creativity and tune into your natural, preferred writing style - which differs for every individual - you make steady progress week after week until the project is finished."

Beginning June 1, Yudkin's four-session course on comfortable writing techniques and the psychology of overcoming obstacles transforms participants’ experience of the writing process. Between the telephone teaching sessions, participants receive inspirational and informative email messages and optionally, check in with a "writing buddy" about what they’re doing to apply the writing lessons. The course works for business writers, aspiring novelists, web content writers, nonfiction authors and anyone else who wants to be able to write consistently and easily.

The basic course costs $197, with ten slots for an upgraded $497 deluxe course that includes a consulting session with Marcia Yudkin and a supplementary set of studio-recorded audios.

To learn more about the course or to enroll, go to http://www.yudkin.com/complete.htm or call 1-800-333-8376.

April 1 2010 - UO Libraries to host Edible Book Festival

John Steinbeck didn't pen the plot quite this way, but he'd appreciate the humor. "Cannery Row" is edible, and it's set in the University of Oregon's Knight Library rather than Steinbeck's own Monterey, Calif.
With a nod to April Fool's Day, the UO Libraries will host the UO Edible Book Festival in the library's Browsing Room from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, April 1. The public is invited to the free event to view examples of edible books - which must be made from consumable components and reflect the concept of "the book" through the use of text, form or literary inspiration.

For example, "Cannery Row" - the edible book creation of UO library cataloger and metadata technician Paul Harvey - is a row of canned vegetables. Entries will be submitted by UO faculty and staff, with small prizes awarded in several categories.

The UO event is modeled after the International Edible Book Festival, which was first held on Thanksgiving, 1999. Two book artists, Judith A. Hoffberg and Béatrice Coron, were inspired to stage the initial festival by French gastronome Jean-Anthelme Brillat-Savarin (1755-1826), famous for his book Physiologie du goût, a witty meditation on food. Since then, edible book festivals have sprung up across the globe on or very near April 1 - Brillat-Savarin's birthday.

Other examples of edible books may be viewed online at the website for the International Edible Book Festival: http://www.books2eat.com/Books2eat/albums/albums.html.

The festival is part of the Year of the Book celebration being held on campus this year.

July 16-18 2010 - Iowa City Book Festival

The 2010 Iowa City Book Festival is set for July 16-18, expanding the event from a one-day event to a three-day festival, which organizers hope will attract an even larger crowd after a successful start in 2009.

To accomplish that goal, organizers are asking local businesses to participate with programming and activities in their places of business on Sunday, July 18, which will be "A Day in the City of Literature" in Iowa City. Among the various activities envisioned are: author events and signings in area bookstores; book-related crafts/projects/materials highlighted in local businesses; open studios hosted by book artists; a walking tour of bookstores; activities for all ages at the Iowa City Public Library; appearances by food writers in restaurants; and book festival specials in local shops and restaurants.

On Saturday, July 17, festival activities will be held once again in Gibson Square outside the UI Main Library's south entrance on the university campus, and will be a mix of booksellers, a small music stage, children's activities, food vendors, book arts demonstrations and readings and panel discussions. The University of Iowa Libraries will host a pre-festival author dinner on Friday, July 16, in the North Exhibition Hall of the Main Library.

The UI Libraries sponsors the event with support from the UI Press, Iowa City Public Library, UI Center for the Book and Prairie Lights Bookstore. With additional support from the UNESCO City of Literature and the Iowa City/Coralville Convention and Visitors Bureau, this year, festival organizers are working toward turning the Iowa City Book Festival into a major Midwest summer attraction, says Kristi Bontrager, festival co-director.

CCNY's 38th Annual Spring Poetry Festival to Take Place May 14

L.S. Asekoff, Kimiko Hahn are Featured Poets

The 38th Annual City College Poetry Festival will take place 9:15 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, May 14, in Theater B of Aaron Davis Hall at W. 135th Street and Convent Avenue on The City College campus. Dubbed "the Woodstock of the Spoken Word," the festival is an all-day, all-verse event that has become New York's longest-running, most established and democratic poetry celebration.

This year's featured guest poets are L.S. Asekoff and Kimiko Hahn. They join a long line of celebrated poets who have appeared at the festival that includes: singer/songwriter Paul Simon, Allen Ginsberg, Gwendolyn Brooks, Muriel Rukeyser, Jayne Cortez, Adrienne Rich, Marie Ponsot, Marilyn Hacker, Philip Levine, Charles Simic, Colette Inez, Stanley Kunitz, Billy Collins, Alicia Ostriker, Elaine Equi, Barry Wallenstein, Major Jackson and , most recently, Stanley Moss.

"The Poetry Festival celebrates the free voices of the young people of New York City's public schools," said Professor Barry Wallenstein, former director of the Poetry Outreach Center. "These students, who show their natural creativity in expressive language, are from every grade level, from all boroughs, and from an ever-growing range of schools."

Elise Buchman, an MFA graduate student at CCNY, has this to say about the festival: "The Poetry Outreach is the highlight of my semester. I teach 4th and 5th grades at PS 169 in Brooklyn. The students are always greatly excited to see me, and I enjoy teaching them poetry. They have such creative imaginations, and poetry allows them to use it, as well as giving them a chance to write. They love the fact that they cannot write anything "wrong" when they write poetry. They are so creative they give me wonderful ideas for my own writing!"

The event begins with readings by elementary school students, followed by poets from junior high schools. Starting around noon, the winners of the Festival's citywide High School Poetry Contest will recite their award-winning poems. They will be followed by readings by the featured guest poets, L.S. Asekoff and Kimiko Hahn.

The Festival concludes with college students, alumni, faculty, and published poets from around the country reading their works from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Internationally known musician Serge Pesce, who has performed at previous festivals, will provide musical interludes and accompany some of the poets.

The Knopf Publishers Prize will award cash prizes to the top three winners of the citywide High School Poetry Contest. In addition, the Festival will present a special award for the best poem in a language other than English. Reflecting the diversity of New York City and The City College of New York, poems have been submitted to the Festival in almost 20 different languages.

The Festival is sponsored by City College's Division of Humanities and the Arts, Dean Geraldine Murphy and the Poetry Outreach Center. Supporters include the CUNY Office of Academic Affairs, CUNY Central, the A.E.C. Foundation at The City College, CCNY Interim President Robert E. Apr 30 2010 - Upcoming Conference To Cover Journalism Ethics

Traditional and new journalism values will intersect at the second annual conference on journalism ethics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Journalism leaders, media experts and scholars will gather for the "New Journalism, New Ethics?" conference on Friday, April 30, to discuss emerging ethical issues for nonprofit forms of journalism and whether traditional standards apply to the use of new media and social media. Do new forms of journalism require new standards?

The conference is hosted by the Center for Journalism Ethics at UW-Madison's School of Journalism and Mass Communication.

"This media revolution is forcing a revolution in ethics," says Stephen J.A. Ward, Burgess Professor of Journalism Ethics and director of the Center for Journalism Ethics. "Key principles are questioned. New practices are praised or derided as unethical. This is exactly the right moment for a conference of journalists, academics, students and the public to come together to explore the future of journalism ethics."

A report on ethical issues for the new, nonprofit investigative newsrooms, based on a January roundtable discussion of leaders in nonprofit journalism, will be released just prior to the conference and then discussed during a morning session of the conference. Also, Charles Lewis, founding executive editor of the Investigative Reporting Workshop and founder of the Center for Public Integrity, will speak about transparency, standards and practices in what he calls a "new journalism ecosystem."

He will be followed by keynote speaker Jon Sawyer, executive director of the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting, whose talk is titled "Bridging the Gaps: Holding True to Old-Media Values in a New-Media World."

Other speakers at the conference include Brant Houston, Knight Chair in Investigative Reporting at the University of Illinois and former director of Investigative Reporters and Editors; Martin Kaiser, editor of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and president of the American Society of Newspaper Editors; Andy Hall, director of the Wisconsin Center for Investigative Reporting; and Phil Rosenthal, media columnist for the Chicago Tribune.

The event runs from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. at the Fluno Center, 601 University Ave. Registration is free for students and $25 for others; register by filling out the form on the center's Web site, http://journalismethics.info/.

Mar 26-28 2010 - Atlanta's Spring Book Show

Spring Book Show 2010, the South's largest bargain book show, comes to the Cobb Galleria Centre in north Atlanta on March 26-28, and the show is shaping up to be a book-buying blowout.

Of the 500 tables available for vendors on the floor layout, all but two have been sold.

While only two spaces for vendors remain available, there is still plenty of opportunity for book buyers to register for the show, said show organizer Larry May of Knoxville, Tenn. The buyers who do register will have an opportunity to buy more than 50,000 different book titles at deeply discounted prices.

Participating book dealers will be offering their wares – mostly remainders in pristine condition and lightly hurt returns – to buyers from chain and independent bookstores; specialty retailers; public and academic libraries; church book stores; department stores; and school media specialists.

Overall attendance at the show is expected to be in the neighborhood of 800-1,000. Prominent among the buyers will be the independent bookstore members belonging to the Southern Independent Booksellers Alliance. In addition, buyers will come from the rest of the U.S. and from many countries around the world, including Japan, Korea, Great Britain, Canada, Nigeria, Ireland, France and Australia.

The late-March show is timed to allow booksellers an opportunity to stock up for the summer selling season, which is characterized by vacations and beach reading.

A gathering to permit vendors and buyers to socialize is planned for the evening of March 26.

May said the bargain book buyers will be able to buy stock for as much as 80 to 90 percent off suggested retail price.

Mar 26 2010 - Atlanta Author to Discuss Making a Living by Self-Publishing

For the book author, landing a publisher has never been harder. Even when you do, count on anemic royalty rates, 18 to 24 months to publication and giving up the rights to your book. And you’ll still be expected to do most of the marketing yourself! Yet, thanks to the Internet, self-publishing has become easier, more viable and more potentially lucrative than ever before.

Peter Bowerman, successful self-publisher of the Well-Fed titles, will share his proven strategies for production, promotion and publicity that yielded 60,000-plus copies of his books in print and a full-time living for eight-plus years at a seminar for writers being held in conjunction with the Spring Book Show at the Cobb Galleria Centre in Atlanta on March 26.

Bowerman, an Atlanta-based freelance commercial writer, is the author of the 2000 award-winning Book-of-the-Month Club selection, The Well-Fed Writer, and its 2005 companion volume, TWFW: Back for Seconds (www.wellfedwriter.com), both self-published, and both how-to standards on lucrative commercial freelancing.

In 2006, Bowerman chronicled his self-publishing success in his third book, The Well-Fed Self-Publisher: How to Turn One Book into a Full-Time Living (www.wellfedsp.com).

Bowerman has published over 250 articles and editorials, leads seminars on writing and is a professional coach on both commercial freelancing business start-up and self-publishing.

Other speakers at the Authorship 101, "How To Become a Successful Author – The Basics," workshop on March 26 are:

* David Fulmer, Shamus winner, author of several mysteries published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, now creating a new publishing house in Atlanta. Topic: "New Games in Town - The Shift in the Publishing Paradigm."

* Ahmad Meradji, president, Apex Book Manufacturing, covering "How To Get Your Self-Published Book Manufactured," and

* Angela K. Durden, author of children’s books, editor of a new anthology of business essays, publisher and businesswoman, covering “Problems of self-editing, level of quality to seek, benefits of hiring an editor, different types of editing.”

Noel Griese of Atlanta-based Anvil Brokers, and editor of the "Southern Review of Books" newsletter, said that people attending the workshop get free admission to the Spring Book Show.

Additional details about the class are available at the Anvil Publishers Web site at http://anvilpub.net/spring_seminars.htm

Learn to Become a Productive Writer from June Teleclass Series

For some, summer is a time to dial back and relax. For others, it's a time with fewer
responsibilities and an opportunity to get into gear. For those who hope July and August
will see progress on a long-delayed, incomplete or never-started writing project, Marcia
Yudkin's "Complete Your Writing Projects" course is a godsend. Via telephone conference
calls and email throughout June, it teaches how to combine discipline and inspiration to get
pages and pages (and more pages!) of writing piling up (www.yudkin.com/complete.htm ).

"People think that in order to get a lot of writing done, you have to write fast," says author
and creativity expert Marcia Yudkin, who has published 11 books, thousands of articles
and close to a dozen multimedia courses. "It's not true. I'm a tortoise when it comes to
writing and rarely write more than three pages a day. However, if you learn to harness your
creativity and make the very most of your writing time, you can pile up completed writing
projects month after month."

Yudkin's four-session teleseminar and email course, which holds its first meeting on June
1, presents perspectives and techniques that transform participants' relationship to the
writing process, such as:

* Which commonly held beliefs and expectations about writing are surprisingly untrue -
and why

* The never-fail secret for resuming work or getting started on a long-stalled writing
project

* Five ways to get lots of writing done in spare chunks of time as brief as three minutes

* How to disconnect from negative influences of the past, like a critical parent or
third-grade teacher, along with ways to scoot around practical obstacles involving space,
time or opportunity

* Your unique creative triggers and how to get them working in your favor

Between the 60-75 minute telephone teaching sessions, participants receive motivational
and informative booster messages and optionally, exchange experiences with a “writing
buddy” who is also taking the course. By the end of June, participants have better focus
and enjoy more pleasure and less pain when it comes to writing.

"For many people, greater productivity translates into lower life stress and higher earnings,"
notes instructor Marcia Yudkin.

Originally developed for Radcliffe Career Services (part of Harvard University), its
techniques have also helped non-academic writers working on everything from business
proposals and web copy to magazine articles, novels and non-fiction books. The basic
course costs $197, with a limited-enrollment $497 deluxe version that includes a consulting
session with Yudkin and a related set of studio-recorded audio CDs.

When you send your work to the agent you'll be able to remind the agent of your meeting at the conference and whatever you talked about. It gives you a foot in the door to acquiring someone who will help sell your work.

The Pennwriters Conference will also help you find ways to polish your manuscript to make it saleable and attractive to agents and editors. You'll be able to attend hour-long workshops led by agents, editors, and published authors. The classes start Friday morning and continue throughout the weekend until Sunday at noon.

Mar 20 and 21 2009 - Medical & Scientific Content Writing Workshop

Cliniminds http://www.cliniminds.com/, announced today one more workshop on Medical & Scientific Content Writing to be held on 20th -21th march 2010 after getting huge response from previous workshops.

Medical writing is the composition, compilation, structuring and reviewing of medical scientific information by a specialized scientist, i.e. a medical writer, who was not involved in the actual experiment and not necessarily in the analysis of the research results. The purpose of having a dedicated writing specialist is to ensure the presentation of the data in timely documents that comply in content, format and structure with internal standard operating procedures of the sponsor and with regulatory requirements or journal guidelines for authors.

Medical writing is a critical and complex activity involving the creation of scientific documentation that facilitates, among other things, interpretation of clinical research results , and clarity on drug use guidelines , besides providing other medical information about the products. The International Association of Professional Ghost Writers will be holding the first of what will be an ongoing series of teleclasses on Wednesday, March 10, 2010.

Entitled "How to Use Twitter to Get Writing Clients," this free class will be given by the IAPGW's Executive Director, Mary Anne Hahn, who chose this topic to kick off the association's teleclass series because of her expertise in using this form of social media to network and build relationships. May 1 2010 - OC Christian Writers Conference

At the OC Christian Writers Conference Susan will tell how she used the Christian Manuscript Submission Service to beat the slush pile to sell her first novel. She then will conduct a drawing to give away a subscription to CMS for those who signed up in the March for the OC Christian Writers Conference. Writers are encouraged to sign up today, and get their book out of the slush pile.

On May 1, 2010, Susan Meissner, the bestselling author of Shape of Mercy, will host a drawing to give away subscription to the Christianmanuscriptsubmissions.com. When Susan first began to write fiction, she quit her fulltime newspaper job as an editor to write her first book. Once she was finished, although she knew writing, she didn't know anyone in the Christian fiction industry. She wasn't known for her writing outside the newspaper circles in Minnesota. With no connections to editors, other fiction writers, or any access to conferences from her rural home, she began sending out query letters and book proposals only to receive her share of rejections. It was obvious to her she needed to expand her chances of being noticed, so when she found Christianmanuscriptsubmissions.com, she listed her first novel, Why the Sky is Blue, on it. It took eight months, but an editor from Harvest House finally read it. Within two months she had received a two-book contract. She went on to write seven more books for Harvest House and then two more for WaterBrook Press.

When a writer has a manuscript ready to sell, it's often intimidating to figure out where to start marketing your book. ChristianManuscriptSubmissions.com was initiated as a cooperative effort of Evangelical Christian Publishers Association (ECPA), which almost every Christian publisher is a member, looking for good authors and desiring an efficient way to review unsolicited manuscripts. Many leading Christian publishers use ChristianManuscriptSubmissions.com as a primary source for unsolicited book proposals as they are unable to process the large amount of print manuscripts mailed to them each day. Aspiring authors now have an open door to present their book proposal to the top publishers producing evangelical Christian literature -- all in one easy step and for only $98 per book proposal! For more info go to http://www.christianmanuscriptsubmissions.com/.
Every one who signs up for the OC Christian Writers Conference in March will be placed in a drawing for one of the subscriptions. The OC Christian Writers Conference is now in its 26th year and will host a wide variety of editors, authors and literary agents. With three keynote talks and twenty-four different workshops to choose from, it's one of the best one-day writers conferences in California. For more information go to OC Christian Writers Conference.

Mar 27 2010 - Sharpen Your Writing Skills and Succeed in Business at Raleigh’s Writing Boot Camp

Professional writers Alice Osborn and Dave Baldwin hold a Writing Boot Camp March 27th at the Holiday Inn Brownstone in Raleigh. Attendees will learn vital tools to build their mastery of the written word.

Raleigh, NC -- With all the buzz on the Internet about the latest marketing fads, it’s easy to get lost in a sea of repetitive information. The battle for people’s eyes and ears grows ever more intense as the quantity of information swells and attention spans shorten.

When asked what prompted writers Alice Osborn and Dave Baldwin to hold the boot camp Alice replied, "Our Writing Boot Camp came about from my students requesting a class that would sharpen their grammar, style and flow. Writers in today's business climate want the confidence good grammar provides."

Dave went on to say, "One thing I've noticed about beginning writers is that they tend to focus on the wrong problem. It's the reader's point of view, not the writer’s, which ultimately dictates the success or failure of any writing. In other words, it's not a question of what to say. It's a question of what you want the reader to hear."

The areas to be addressed are: Sales and Marketing, Branding, Social Media and Everyday Communication Protocols.

The Writing Boot Camp, Co-presented by Alice Osborn and Dave Baldwin is being held at the Holiday Inn Brownstone, 1707 Hillsborough St., Raleigh, NC 27605 on Saturday, March 27, 2010 from 8:00am – 4:30 pm. Open networking and continental breakfast at 8:00am. Class will begin promptly at 8:30. A gourmet pasta lunch is provided. The fee for The Writing Boot Camp is $249. For more info and to register go to http://WritingBootCamp.eventbrite.com/
