Sept 30 2008 - Writing Science Fiction and Fantasy - WA

Have you ever wanted to write science fiction or fantasy? The Writer's Center is offering a workshop designed to help the aspiring Science Fiction/Fantasy writer through emphasis on plot and character-oriented fiction and on what makes a story suited to be science fiction or fantasy. We will work on revising and rewriting our stories to hone them into their best form. This workshop is open to both teenagers and adults. African-American literary journal Callaloo to present four readings Aug. 6

Four faculty members from the 2008 Callaloo Creative Writing Workshops will read from their poetry and fiction at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 6.

The event is free and open to the public and takes place in Washington University's Hurst Lounge, Room 201, Duncker Hall. A reception for the authors will immediately follow. Duncker Hall is located in Brookings Quadrangle, near the intersection of Brookings and Hoyt drives.

Launched in 1976 by editor Charles H. Rowell, Callaloo is the premier African-American and African literary journal, publishing a rich mixture of fiction, poetry, plays, critical essays, interviews and visual art from the African diaspora. The annual Callaloo Creative Writing Workshops — hosted this year by Washington University, from Aug. 3 to 16 — are designed to assist new and developing writers by providing intensive and individual instruction in the writing of fiction and poetry.

The Aug. 6 event will feature readings by poets Tracy K. Smith and A. Van Jordan, and by fiction writers Mat Johnson and Nelly Rosario.

In addition to the faculty readings, the Callaloo Creative Writings Workshop will conclude with two nights of student readings, at 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday, Aug. 14 and 15, also in Hurst Lounge.

Sept 27 2008 - Famed Authors to Participate in Eighth Annual National Book Festival - Washington, D.C.

The 2008 National Book Festival, organized and sponsored by the Library of Congress and hosted by Mrs. Laura Bush, will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 27, rain or shine, on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., between 3rd and 7th streets. The festival is free and open to the public.

Among some 70 authors and illustrators participating this year are Tiki Barber, Marc Brown, Warren Brown, Kimberly Dozier, Arthur Frommer and Pauline Frommer, Philippa Gregory, Steven Kellogg, Brad Meltzer, Salman Rushdie, Bob Schieffer, Daniel Schorr, Alexander McCall Smith, Paul Theroux and Dionne Warwick. Jon Scieszka, a children's book author recently named the National Ambassador for Young People's Literature by the Librarian of Congress, will be among the authors presenting in the Teens & Children's Pavilion.

The festival authors, illustrators and poets will talk about their work in pavilions dedicated to Children, Teens & Children, Fiction & Mystery, History & Biography, Home & Family and Poetry. PBS characters and NBA/WNBA players will appear at the festival including NBA Legend and Hall of Famer Bob Lanier. Each year, players participate in the festival by reading their favorite children's books aloud with the help of students from local area schools as part of "NBA Cares."

The Pavilion of the States, sponsored by the Institute of Museum and Library Services, will highlight reading, literacy and library promotion activities in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and several American trusts and territories.

The Library of Congress Pavilion will feature a variety of family-centered activities illustrating the depth and breadth of the Library's extraordinary collections available online. It will also offer a sampling of interactive activities available through the recently launched Library of Congress Experience.

Presentations by young poets and artists will be a new feature in the Teens & Children Pavilion. Each of the K-12 students presenting will be a winner in the River of Words environmental poetry and art contest sponsored by the Library's Center for the Book.

A presentation by four of the more than 100 authors and illustrators who contributed to the volume "Our White House: Looking In, Looking Out," sponsored by the National Children's Book and Literacy Alliance, will be featured in the Teens & Children Pavilion. Those writers are Mary Brigid Barrett, Steven Kellogg, Katherine Paterson, and Jon Scieszka. (The book, with an introduction written by David McCullough, is published by Candlewick Press, 2008.)

It's the time of year that all poets look forward to. The largest poetry organization in the world, the International Society of Poets (ISP), will hold its annual poetry convention in Las Vegas, Nevada on Thursday, July 24, 2008 through Sunday, July 27, 2008. Poets will participate in an onsite poetry contest, attend educational lectures and seminars, take part in reading rooms and rap sessions, and enjoy world-class entertainment. October 10-12 2008 - Southern Festival of Books

The Southern Festival of Books returns to Nashville in 2008 at the War Memorial Plaza on October 10-12. The Southern Festival of Books is held annually in October and was one of the first American book festivals beginning in 1989. The Festival is celebrating its 20th year this fall. The three-day gala invites more than 200 authors in all genres.

For the first time, the Southern Festival of Books will host an "Authors in the Round," dinner and gala on Friday, October 10th. Over 40 authors will be attending and will sit at each table with the attendees. The dinner will be hosted by John Seigenthaler from "A Word on Words" that airs on NPT-Nashville Public Television. "This will be an extraordinary literary gathering for people who love books. July 18-20 2008 Pulitzer Prize Winner Renée Byer to Speak at Third-Annual Bellingham Visual Journalism Conference

Renée Byer of The Sacramento Bee, 2007 Pulitzer Prize winner for Feature Photography, will speak at the third-annual Bellingham Visual Journalism Conference sponsored by Western Washington University's Department of Journalism.

The conference will take place at Western on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, July 18-20.
Leaders in the field of visual journalism, including photographers, multimedia producers, designers, and online editors, will share their expertise. Attendees will have the opportunity to explore new avenues for visual storytelling, upgrade their skills, and have their portfolios critiqued by professional visual journalists.

Among the presenters will be Seattle Times photojournalist Steve Ringman, two-time Newspaper Photographer of the Year; Kevin Jackson, executive director of ESPN.com; and Jane Seagrave, senior vice-president for global product development at the Associated Press.

Also, Janet Jensen, NPPA Region XI 2007 Photographer of the Year; Steve McKinstry, graphics team leader at the Oregonian; Julie Simon, graphics editor of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer; Andy Clark, photographer for Reuters; Bellamy Pailthorp, reporter for NPR's KPLU; and multimedia producers Tiffany Campbell of the Seattle Times, Sarah Rupp of the Post-Intelligencer, and Judy Siviglia of the Oregonian.

The multimedia workshop, "Taking Your Audio Slideshow to the Next Level," will be Friday, July 18, and will be limited to 15 students. Cost is $25, and registration is first-come, first-served.

The conference will have two panel discussions this year: multimedia and sports shooting. Among the speakers on the sports-shooting panel will be Elaine Thompson of the Associated Press, Dean Rutz of the Seattle Times, Jay Drowns of the Sporting News and Chris Anderson of the Spokane Spokesman-Review.

The conference will again include a silent auction of photographic prints to benefit the Jimi Lott Memorial Scholarship. Lott, an award-winning photographer for the Skagit Valley Herald, Spokane Spokesman-Review and the Seattle Times, died in 2005.
