October 10-12 2008 - Southern Festival of Books Authors to Wine and Dine with Attendees

The Southern Festival of Books returns to Nashville in 2008 at the War Memorial Plaza on October 10-12. The Southern Festival of Books is held annually in October and was one of the first American book festivals beginning in 1989. The Festival is celebrating its 20th year this fall. The three-day gala invites more than 200 authors in all genres.

For the first time, the Southern Festival of Books will host an "Authors in the Round," dinner and gala on Friday, October 10th. Over 40 authors will be attending and will sit at each table with the attendees. The dinner will be hosted by John Seigenthaler from "A Word on Words" that airs on NPT-Nashville Public Television. "This will be an extraordinary literary gathering for people who love books. How often do you get to have dinner with a favorite, world-renown author?" said Todd Bottorff, Publisher at Turner Publishing, Honorary Chairman of the evening.

"We have been overwhelmed by the response to the event, most tables have already been reserved. With only a few remaining, we imagine that the event will be sold out well in advance," commented Serenity Gerbman, coordinator of the festival.

President of Humanities Tennessee, Robert Cheatham said, "Humanities Tennessee is excited about the Authors in the Round dinner and the commitment and enthusiasm of the volunteers who are organizing this fund-raising event for the Southern Festival of Books. It represents a genuine commitment to the future of the Festival and a recognition of the importance of this event in the cultural life of Nashville,"

A sample of confirmed authors include: Darrell Arnoult, Madison Smartt Bell, Rick Bragg, Clyde Edgerton, Justin Evans, Beth Ann Fennelly, Robert Hicks, David Maraniss, Brenda Vantrease, Frank Durham, and others.

July 8 2008 - Writing in the Middle Years, for Fun or Profit

The National Association of Baby Boomer Women (NABBW) announces its July 2008 teleseminar series, "Writing in the Middle Years, for Fun or Profit." The two-part series begins July 8 and will offer boomer women insider secrets and keys to writing your book, branding yourself as an author and expert, the different publishing options available in today's markets, and strategies for attracting publicity for your book. According to NABBW founder and director, Dotsie Bregel, Baby Boomers are reinventing themselves with new lifestyles and careers, one of which is writing; whether for profit, or for the fun of it.

"Boomer women are looking for outlets. In some cases, writing and journaling, two very popular baby boomer trends, gives them a place to vent, record, and create. Memories are preserved, vital information kept in tact, and new adventures are taken. Even second careers for some baby boomer women are born. And all through pages and pages of words." said Bregel. "Today's boomer woman isn't afraid of stepping out and trying new things, and sometimes, midlife offers them the freedom to get in touch with their baby boomer values while exploring and developing their creative side. Like any new interest, today's boomer woman wants to be the best she can be, so asking questions and finding answers to develop her hobby or new found freedom in writing is just the ticket. They are looking for ways to enhance their skills, and want information on the latest trends and techniques for these outlets."

The NABBW teleseminar series is designed to give women up-to-date information on how to get started writing that book, and the diverse publishing options available to them. This teleseminar promises to dispel the rumor that, "it's a jungle out there." Marketing strategies and how to balance that busy professional, personal, and "writing" life, will also be shared.

This two-part teleseminar series continues on July 24, and is for the Boomer Woman who is interested in recording their thoughts and getting acquainted with who they are, what they want, and what they feel. Journaling styles and techniques will be discussed to help the boomer woman expand and clarify her inner life. Bregel believes that adding journaling to your life can empower boomer women and help them to identify themselves as a woman, mother, wife, healer, creator, and dreamer. "What could be better than discovering who you really are inside," says Bregel, "And at the same time, leaving a legacy for generations to come."

"Boomer women are serious about living full lives and they are looking for ways to express themselves like they've never done before. They are braver, more informed, and creative. If they want to know how to move forward with their creative self, they look to our association to help them learn how to do just that. That's why we're here; to educate, to encourage, and to lift the Boomer woman's spirit as she experiences what life has to offer her for the next fifty years."

For more information and to sign up for the NABBW's ‘Writing in the Middle Years, for Fun or Profit' teleseminar series, visit the National Association of Baby Boomer Women, www.nabbw.com.

Writing the Short Humor Column (Online)
June 25 - July 30

Witty. Quirky. Creative. All in 500 words or less. It's quite possibly the most fun you will ever have as a writer. Humor columns give you the chance to express your own distinct voice in a format that newspapers or magazines might actually use.

We look at how to generate ideas, strike a funny tone, write jokes--and approach editors with an eye on publication. Column writing enables you to touch on virtually any subject, including relationships, politics, sports, and entertainment.

Anything works as long as you can spin it in a humorous way. Writing in this format also builds that much needed writer's discipline since every word counts. Get in a writing (and rewriting) rhythm with your own weekly humor column. Enrollment limited to 15 students.

Howard Leff, freelance writer whose humor columns have appeared in Los Angeles Times, Los Angeles Downtown News, and Chicago Tribune's RedEye. Mr. Leff, like most people, once worked as a stand-up comic.

June 28 2008 - SPJ to Host Citizen Journalism Academy - Los Angeles

The Society of Professional Journalists will host the third of three Citizen Journalism Academy programs June 28 at the Loyola Law School Los Angeles, Robinson Courtroom, 919 Albany St., Los Angeles.

The workshop will teach citizens how to practice accurate and ethical journalism. The Society aims to help participants understand how such practices could increase reach and reputations within a specified community and around the world.

"As people are practicing journalism through blogs, Web site production and interaction with sites maintained by mainstream news organizations, they're contributing to the daily news cycle while influencing how community members get their news and perceive the world around them," said SPJ President Clint Brewer. "SPJ sees this as an opportunity to help citizen journalists by arming them with the tools they will need to be an effective citizen journalist or community watchdog."

Topics in these one-day workshops will explore:

-- Journalism ethics. The new-media landscape is rife with dilemmas for anyone wanting to report accurately, fairly and outside the bounds of special interests.

-- The basics of media law. The same longstanding laws concerning libel, slander and access to people and information apply to 21st-century news-gatherers.

-- Access to public records and meetings. Public information can add substance and value to every news story. But knowing where to look for it can be tough.

-- Standard and responsible reporting practices. With media ethics and law in mind, how else should news-gatherers approach sources?

-- The use of technology. We'll show you an array of tools you could start using -- or continue using even more effectively.

The program will take place from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The cost to attend the Citizen Journalism Academy is $25, which includes lunch and course materials. For more information about this program or to register, visit http://spj.org/cja.asp.

October 24-26 2008 - Wine Bloggers Conference - California

America's new wine media will gather in Sonoma County, California on October 24-26 for the first annual Wine Bloggers Conference. As the number and influence of wine bloggers grows, the Sonoma gathering will bring together hundreds of online wine scribes to discuss their impact, how to better impart information to wine lovers across the globe, and how to stake their claim as the next generation of wine media.

Organized by the OpenWine Consortium and Zephyr Wine Adventures, the three-day conference will take place at the Flamingo Resort and Spa in Santa Rosa, California. Wine Bloggers and other attendees will be treated to a series of seminars, vineyard walks, wine dinners, tasting competitions, and an exposition of mass wine blogging.

WINE BLOGGING CHANGING WINE JOURNALISM

"Wine blogging in America has exploded in terms of the number of people maintaining wine blogs as well as their impact on how wine lovers and the industry get their news," said Joel Vincent, an organizer of the conference. "The wine blogging community has always been close knit but never had an event of its own or opportunity to all come together to discuss the state of their efforts."

In addition to wine bloggers, the conference is open to wine industry participants and media professionals that want to learn more about the wine blogging community and how it is changing the way wine information and news is communicated.

Among the speakers at the 2008 Wine Bloggers Conference will be Alice Feiring, an award-winning writer and author who also maintains her own wine blog, and Gary Vaynerchuk, author, wine retailer and proprietor of the wildly popular Wine Library TV videoblog.

WINE BLOGGERS WIELDING INCREASED CLOUT

The sponsors of this year's conference indicate the importance and growing influence of wine bloggers. Among those sponsoring the conference are Sebastiani Vineyards, the Sonoma County Tourism Bureau, Inertia Beverage Group, the Sonoma County Vintners Association, and the Sonoma Winegrape Commission.

"For decades wine writing and popular wine education has been dominated by a few visible critics and wine publications, yet the emergence of hundreds of wine blogs and their millions of readers is changing that old model," explained Vincent. "Technology is changing the wine industry is covered and explored that has a broader and more democratic character. The bloggers attending this year's conference are responsible for implementing these changes."

More information on the 2008 Wine Bloggers Conference can be found at: http://www.winebloggersconference.com/.

The schedule includes readings and presentations, a book signing by author and illustrator Edward Hemingway, a world-premiere play reading and the announcement of the winners of the Lorian Hemingway Short Story Competition.

Lorian Hemingway, critically acclaimed author of "Walking Into the River," "Walk on Water" and "A World Turned Over," also is a journalist whose work has appeared in publications including "GQ," "Rolling Stone" and "Esquire" magazines.

A granddaughter of Ernest Hemingway, she has directed the short story competition since its inception in 1981. The literary contest was created to recognize and support the talents of emerging writers.

Lorian Hemingway plans to announce the winners of the 2008 competition at 8 p.m. Friday, July 18. The first-place writer is to receive $1,000, while second- and third-place winners are awarded $500 each and others receive honorable mentions.

The awards announcement reception is scheduled to take place at Ernest Hemingway's first Key West residence, Casa Antigua, 314 Simonton St. Completely restored since Hemingway's era, the property is a showplace with a soaring central atrium garden open to the sky. Owners Tom Oosterhoudt and his mother, Mary Ann Worth, are longtime supporters of the arts who open their home each year to sponsor and host the short story events.

The awards reception is to include a reading of the winning entry, a presentation on Casa Antigua's unique history by Tom Oosterhoudt and tours of the property. Admission is free.

Another scheduled Hemingway Days literary highlight is a book signing and reception celebrating the release of "Bump in the Night," a children's book written and illustrated by Edward Hemingway, Ernest's youngest grandson.

The event is set for 5:30-7 p.m. Tuesday, July 15, in the colorful outdoor courtyard of Key West's landmark Blue Heaven restaurant and bar, 729 Thomas St. Blue Heaven is located on the former site of a boxing ring where Ernest Hemingway refereed neighborhood matches when he lived in the island city.

"Bump in the Night" features blue-hued retro-style illustrations, an appealing young hero, humor and a reassuring message that debunks childhood fears. Edward Hemingway's previous writing and illustrations have appeared in "Gourmet," "GQ" and "Nickelodeon" magazines, among other outlets.

The Blue Heaven reception will feature light refreshments. Admission is free to kids, grownups and everyone who wants to find out why there's no need to fear a "Bump in the Night."

Writers and photographers whose work has been influenced by Key West are to star at an evening of readings, presentations and discussions Wednesday, July 16. Scheduled for 8 p.m., the literary evening is hosted by Wyland Galleries of Key West and takes place at Wyland's 623 Duval St. gallery.

Notable participants include Lorian Hemingway, treasure-diving photographer and writer Don Kincaid, who played a pivotal role in the discovery of the shipwrecked Spanish galleon Nuestra SeƱora de Atocha off Key West; author/photographer and expert angler Jeffrey Cardenas, whose books "Sea Level" and "Marquesa: A Time & Place with Fish," blend natural history and fishing reminiscences; and writer, artist and writing coach Cricket Desmarais, editor of Key West's acclaimed literary/art annual "the secret of salt: an indigenous journal."

"Voices, Places, Inspirations" features a reception where attendees can mingle with presenters and discover the work of marine life artist Wyland and his creative contemporaries. Admission is free.

The world-premiere reading of "Storm Surge" by Southern playwright Hubert Grissom is planned for Thursday, July 17. The offbeat comedy-drama touches on drag antics, the Hemingway family legacy, struggles with relationships and addiction, a set of mismatched twins and the puzzle of gender identity.
